CS 181 - Electronic Publishing on the WWW * ~ CLASSROOM SUPPLEMENTS

Assignment #3 - Photoshop Comp of your second site's design

One way to design a web site is to use Photoshop to create a homepage look (and later morph that look into a secondary page look).  The example I show in the course materials focuses on creating a look and then coding it into a table design.  However, you can use Photoshop comp (or many graphic programs really) to create a design that is then translated inot a css based or javascript design also.

You are really doing is using Photoshop as an artist's sketchpad.  You use Photoshop tools to add images, shapes and text.  What is helpful about using Photoshop is that you aren't distracted from design by having to code the html (although you do have to be somewhat aware of what is possible in a web page).

For our assignment, you will be creating a Photoshop comp that you will then store in your web area - and send me an email letting me know that it is ready.  I ask for a Photoshop file (.psd)  - so that I can see the layers that are maintained in such a file format - and a .jpg.  Both of these files should be named "comp" and placed at the top level/ root / main area of your modwest space [comp.psd and comp.jpg].

Example: http://cs181.modwest.com/cs181a/comp.jpg (notice how there's one of those 20% (spaces) in my URL. Ugly ... I believe!

Grading: Photoshop file placed 15%; .jpg file placed 15%; 10%* for putting your email address somewhere in the comp; 10% for a text area; 10% for an image; 10% for a Photoshop Object (square, circle, drop shadow, etc); 10% for each layer up to three layers (that's 30% total that's present) [*Crucial for one of the class participation assignments.]

Objectives: Reinforce the idea that coding from a design saves time

Provide experience using very basic Photoshop tools

Files Items Layers
.jpg (15%) text area (10%) one 10%
.psd (15%) image (10%) two 10%
  Photoshop object (10%) three 10%
  your email address (10%)
